People always ask writers, where do you get your ideas? The answer is that some you have to dig for, like unearthing a dinosaur bone. Other times, it's like you've walked into a wall because they are so obvious.
I'm sure you will agree, getting ideas is not difficult. It's choosing one and then doing something with it that is hard.
I have begun a new story. I've talked about it a bit. It's a little gothic tale I want to begin and finish writing in the next two months. This last week I have drafted a scene list in a spiral notebook and, today, I have begun entering each scene into my computer so I can begin writing it.
That was the first step. I had an idea and, next, I needed to know what the in-s and outs of the idea. That's why I made the scene list. I didn't quite know the plot when I first began the list but, through creating it, I found out what happened in the beginning, the middle and the end. It helped me find the broader plot and the smaller storylines within it.
I am an outliner. This is how an outliner works. Pantsers, you operate totally differently and I am impressed. I couldn't do what you do.
I'll keep talking about the process of beginning a story over the next few days. In the meantime, what process do you follow to turn an idea into a story?
